Robert Shaw, 1916-1999
I started this discography in the summer of 1999, based largely on the works presently in print and those from my own collection. Since then it has grown with contributions of information from email correspondents, and gleaned from online library catalogs and archives. It it still incomplete. If you know of other releases not listed here, especially old vinyl releases, please email me. Many thanks to all of those who have contributed information to this discography. Special thanks go to Nick Jones and Nola Frink of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

Looking for copies of these recordings? See Where to buy these CDs at the bottom of this page.

A note on the RCA numbering system: releases coded LM are monaural and LSC are stereo. Many of Shaw's recordings were released in both formats. For additional information about record catalog codes, see Howard S. Friedman's article on this subject.

Joy to the World
Robert Shaw Chorale, RCA/Camden #CAD1448 and CAL-448 RE, Laserlight, Delta #21726 (2000 release)

The extent of disagreement about this single recording is astonishing. I have been told with great authority that it's a remastering of the 1946 recording, the 1951 recording, the 1954 recording and the 1957 recording of "Christmas Hymns & Carols Vol. I".

In an effort to settle this question, I purchased a copy of the 1958 release of "Joy to the World" on eBay. This is Camden CAL-448-RE with the orange cover. Under the track list on the reverse are these words: "Recorded on 12/6/45, 12/8/45 and 6/5/46". A scan of the back cover is provided. This was pieced together from four scans, since my scanner is not large enough to handle an entire album cover in one pass. If you are viewing this using Internet Explorer, you may wish to turn off the automatic image resizing function.

For those interested in trivia, the Echo Hymn is called the Christmas Hymn on the earliest release, and the carol in which "the angels did say", is spelled in the English fashion in 1957, The First Nowell, and in the French form, The First Noel, in later releases.

Information about this recording has been supplied by Bradley Taylor, Mike Mendon and Chip Arcuri. Ellen Carnahan supplied track listing of the 1957 recording. I am appreciative to all of these individuals for their assistance.

Joy to the World/It Came Upon a Midnight Clear/Angels We Have Heard on High, O Come O Come Emanuel/ O Little Town of Bethlehem/Silent Night, O Come All Ye Faithful/Away in the Manger/God Rest You Merry Gentlemen, We Three Kings/The First Noel/Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Shepherd's Carol/Coventry Carol/Patapan, My Dancing Day/I Wonder as I Wander/Bring a Torch Jeanette Isabella, Carol of the Bells/Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming/Go Tell it on the Mountain, I Sing of a Maiden/Echo Hymn/Wassail Song/Deck The Halls
